Uganda: Africa's Only Complete Safari

Where Worlds Collide

Where else can you track gorillas in misty mountains, watch lions hunt on golden savanna, and meet chimpanzees in ancient forests—all in one country? Uganda’s extraordinary geographic position at the crossroads of East Africa’s ecosystems creates a safari experience impossible to find elsewhere.

Straddling the equator and cradled between the eastern and western branches of the Great Rift Valley, Uganda represents a remarkable convergence of landscapes. Here, the endless savannas of East Africa meet the dense rainforests of Central Africa, creating a biodiversity hotspot unlike any other on the continent.

The Pearl of Africa

When Winston Churchill famously called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa,” he wasn’t exaggerating. This compact country packs an astonishing variety of experiences into its borders. From the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains (Africa’s legendary “Mountains of the Moon”) to the vast waters of Lake Victoria, Uganda’s landscapes are as diverse as they are breathtaking.

What makes Uganda truly unique is that these varied ecosystems exist in close proximity, allowing travelers to experience dramatically different worlds within a single journey. At WildPlaces, we’ve strategically positioned our lodges to showcase the best of Uganda’s ecological diversity.

Primates: Face-to-Face Encounters

Uganda offers the world’s most comprehensive primate experience, with opportunities to encounter multiple species in their natural habitats.

Mountain Gorillas: A Life-Changing Encounter

In the misty forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas make their home. Tracking these gentle giants is often described as life-changing—a sentiment we hear repeatedly from guests at Clouds.

Perched at 2,000 meters above sea level on the edge of Bwindi, Clouds offers the highest accommodation in Uganda. From your private cottage, you can gaze across to the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the ancient forest stretching below. After a day of gorilla tracking, return to a crackling fire and the warm hospitality that has made Clouds famous.

Chimpanzees: Our Closest Relatives

While gorillas may be the headline act, Uganda’s chimpanzee experiences are equally compelling. At Semliki, guests can track wild chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of primates.

“The first time I went to Mugiri forest, I heard my first wild chimpanzees,” Johnny recalls. “The sound was so primeval, so loud and so extraordinary it blew my mind with excitement.”

The Kyambura Gorge, near our newest properties—Honey Bear and The River Station—offers another remarkable chimpanzee experience. This 100-meter deep “underground forest” is home to a small isolated community of chimpanzees, creating a unique tracking experience through a landscape that feels like something from a lost world.

Savanna: Classic African Safari

Uganda’s savanna parks rival the best in East Africa, offering spectacular wildlife viewing without the crowds found in more famous destinations.

Kidepo Valley: Africa's Last Frontier

In the far northeastern corner of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park represents Africa at its most wild and untamed. This remote wilderness, bordered by South Sudan and Kenya, is home to over 77 mammal species and nearly 500 bird species.

From Apoka, the only luxury accommodation in the park, guests can watch elephants, buffalo, and zebra gather at the watering hole just meters from the swimming pool. Game drives reveal lions lounging in sausage trees, cheetahs scanning the golden plains, and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe moving gracefully across the landscape.

Murchison Falls: Where the Nile Roars

At Murchison Falls National Park, the world’s longest river is forced through a seven-meter gap in the rock, creating one of Africa’s most spectacular natural features. The surrounding savanna teems with elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, while the river itself hosts one of the largest hippo and crocodile populations in Africa.

Our newest addition, Papa’s Camp, offers an intimate base for exploring this magnificent park. With just four tents overlooking the mighty Nile, guests enjoy a front-row seat to the drama of river life.

“Papa’s Camp is a testament to the power of tourism as a force for conservation,” Fergus explains. “A few years ago you would have had to search for days to find any animals, but now the difference is astounding with tens of thousands of Uganda Kob, and lion spotted every day!”

Forests: Ancient and Mysterious

Uganda’s forests represent some of the last remaining patches of ancient woodland that once covered much of Africa.

Semliki Valley: Where Central Africa Meets East Africa

The Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve, home to our original lodge, represents a remarkable transition zone where the Central African rainforest meets East African savanna. This creates a unique habitat where forest elephants and savanna elephants coexist, and both forest and savanna birds can be spotted.

Semliki, with its elegant tented suites and colonial charm, offers a glimpse into the golden age of African exploration. Here, guests can track chimpanzees, search for the elusive shoebill stork, and experience night drives that reveal the forest’s nocturnal residents.

“An all-time favourite is the Dawn Chorus at Semliki,” Fergus shares, “when the forest bursts into life in the morning with Colobus monkey roars echoing around the valley, Chimps hooting, Great Blue Turaco and hornbills cawing all building up into a glorious crescendo of an alarm clock.”

The Complete Safari Experience

What sets Uganda apart is not just the presence of these diverse ecosystems, but how they can be experienced in a single journey. A two-week itinerary with WildPlaces Africa can include:

  • Gorilla tracking in misty mountain forests
  • Chimpanzee encounters in lush rainforests
  • Classic savanna game drives with lions, elephants, and giraffes
  • Boat safaris along the Nile and Kazinga Channel
  • Birdwatching that can yield over 300 species in a single trip
  • Cultural experiences with Uganda’s diverse communities

“The incredible biodiversity and habitats coupled with the astonishing array of big geographic features,” Johnny notes, “the Great Lakes of Africa, the Nile the longest river in Africa, the Virunga Volcanoes, the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Africa and the myriad of habitats that crisscross the country.”

This comprehensive safari experience, impossible to find elsewhere in Africa, is what makes Uganda truly special. And with the 2025 opening of Kulu Ora, our newest property in Murchison Falls, the WildPlaces collection will offer the most complete way to experience Uganda’s extraordinary diversity.

Conservation: Protecting Uganda's Wild Places

As Uganda’s tourism industry grows, the protection of these diverse ecosystems becomes increasingly important. Through the newly established WildPlaces Conservation Foundation, we’re committed to ensuring that Uganda’s wild places remain wild for generations to come.

“The WildPlaces Conservation Foundation has given me a huge amount of hope for the future of Uganda’s Wildlife,” Fergus shares. “There are of course other conservation organizations and projects out there, but many are focused on the major busier areas of national parks and these quiet, wilder spots have been overlooked or ignored. The foundation is our promise to always keep fighting for those rejects.”

By staying at WildPlaces properties, guests directly contribute to conservation efforts in these critical areas, with a conservation fee of USD 25 per night supporting anti-poaching initiatives, removal of invasive species, and community education programs.

The Wildplaces Difference

What makes a WildPlaces safari unique is our intimate knowledge of Uganda, gained over nearly three decades of exploration and operation. As Jonathan Wright, born on the banks of the Nile, often says, “Uganda isn’t just where we work—it’s home.”

This deep connection to the land and its people informs everything we do, from the design of our lodges to the training of our guides. At each WildPlaces property, guests experience Uganda through the eyes of people who truly love this extraordinary country.

Whether you’re watching the sun set over Kidepo Valley from Apoka’s rock pool, tracking gorillas in the mist from Clouds, or listening to hippos grunt from your tent at Papa’s Camp, a WildPlaces safari offers an authentic, intimate experience of Uganda’s wild places—Africa’s only complete safari destination.

Come and Stay Awhile.
